Therapy
Individualized speech language therapy is conducted in your home, via Telehealth, or in the community. Session length and frequency is determined based on your child’s needs.
Therapy may address:
Language activities to help children develop effective communication skills
Using sounds, words and gestures to communicate wants and needs
Producing specific speech sounds and increasing how well a child is understood
Speech Therapy
A speech sound disorder is a communication disorder in which children have continual difficulty saying sounds or words correctly. Most children make some mistakes as they learn to say new words, but a child who does not say sounds by an expected age may have a speech sound disorder. Speech therapy addresses children with delays or disorders in the following areas:
Problems with articulation (sound production)
Phonology (sound patterns)
Childhood Apraxia of Speech (deficits of motor planning)
Structural differences (cleft lip/palate)
Physiological deficits (tongue thrust, dysarthria).
Language Therapy
Language therapy addresses children with delays or disorders in the following areas:
Listening Skills: How your child is able to understand what is being said to them and follow directions.
Grammar Skills: Your child’s ability to use grammatical markers to form complete sentences.
Vocabulary Skills: Your child’s knowledge of what things are called and their ability to understand those words when spoken as well as to recall and say the word when needed.
Question Skills: Your child’s ability to answer and ask questions with a variety of structures.
Social Language Skills (Pragmatics): Your child’s ability to use language to interact with others and follow social rules of conversation and play.
Literacy/Book Skills: Your child’s ability to read and write or use pre-reading skills such as book handling, recognizing print, etc.
What does therapy look like?
Speech language therapy is individualized to meet the specific needs of your child. We begin with a comprehensive evaluation to identify areas your child has difficulties with. Intervention is carefully curated to teach the skill to your child. This involves breaking the skill down into smaller steps and specifically teaching each skill to the child. For example, if your child is working on answering “where” questions, we begin by identifying that “where” means place and practice answering in a variety of natural contexts (i.e. stories, games, play, etc.) If your child is working on a specific speech sound, we begin by teaching the child how the sound is produced and practice saying the sound correctly in various contexts (i.e. syllables, words, sentences, conversation, etc.) As the child’s accuracy increases with a specific task, we begin increasing complexity of therapy tasks. We use a variety of techniques to help teach your child a skill, including pictures, verbal cues, gestures, etc.
